April 20,2007- The Reds honored late pitching coach Vern Ruhle before Thursday's game with the Houston Astros. A replica of Ruhle's No. 58 jersey was unveiled above the center-field bullpen. Ruhle died Jan. 20 of complications from a donor stem cell transplant he received for treatment from multiple myeloma.
Forty members of Ruhle's family were present for the pregame ceremony. Sue Ruhle, Vern's widow, honored him by tossing out the first pitch of the game to Aaron Harang. "It's great," Reds manager Jerry Narron said. "He was a great baseball man. He loved teaching. He got very close to these guys in a very short time. He's missed."
